Spar Caves, a great wee hide away......

This is a lovely wee hide away that I understand has a long and interesting past visited by many a wealthy victorian and the odd vagabond. I'm sure if you dig about enough you might even find that the Loch Ness monster lived off shore for a few years. I'm finding that some of tales of Skye are apparently proportianate with its beauty but I shall leave these tales for you to find yourself.

I love this place,it's a place of rugged beauty and just another one of the many hidden treasures in Skye.

Spar Caves is on the East of West Coast of Skye, a trip here will easily kill off a few hours should you find yourself lucky enough to have spare time on the Island. The caves are not far from Elgol so it's worthwhile planning ahead and checking out the tide times to make the most of the day for your visit. Be careful on your way down and back cause it's slippy steep and a fall off the wee cliff is going to ruin your day at best. Even on a cold day the caves are pleasantly mild but particularly wet so make sure you've got a water proof and a good torch and beware of the tide times or you'll end up getting yourself stranded, and in winter, if that happens you've a good chance you'll end up clambering over rocks in the dark to escape.

The only critical thing with photography here is keeping your camera dry. It is difficult not to see interesting photographic potential in this place,. Don't know what its like all year round but when these photographs were taken, water; dripped, sprayed, seeped and oozed from every part of this cave. I used a Nikon Aw 120 and Fuji XE2 to take these photogrphs but was much happier entering the cave with my XE2 in my dry bag and using the waterproof compact in the cave.

If you visit my Skye page I have more photographs, google maps and a link to Walkhighlands web site which has information on great walks, access and walking conditions. The link wil take you straight to Spar Caves.

If you get the chance its worth the visit as long as your happy to to get wet and muddy.
